Review of Henry Hoover HVR200 – UK’s Famous Vacuum

Henry is a household name. British made, and a vacuum cleaner that we have all seen or owned at some point in our life, it is a solid and robust brand that really delivers results.

After the EU implemented new rules that stated vacuum cleaners would have to run at a lower wattage, there was some debate with regards to whether or not vacuum cleaners would be as powerful as they were.

Presenting the Numatic Henry HVR200-12

Numatic Henry HVR200-12

The Numatic Henry HVR200-12 is the ideal vacuum cleaner if you are looking for something robust and reliable, but that is also able to cope with cleaning up even the biggest messes in your home.

Despite its lower wattage, you will be surprised by the amount of power that it is able to offer you, and it promises to work hard to get rid of all the debris on your floors.

However, if you are in search of something that is incredible for pet hair and other fibres, you might want to check out the Henry Extra instead.

Features and Benefits

Power & Design

This cylinder vacuum has surprisingly powerful suction even though it only has around 600 watts of power. The motor inside the Numatic Henry HVR200-12 is actually a new design that has been made to enhance the suction power without increasing the wattage – making it an incredibly environmentally friendly option. Additionally, it will help to save a little money on your energy bill.

Following on from this, there is also the option to switch between two power modes: low and high. The former is ideal for hard floors, while the latter has been designed for carpets. There is more on how effective this model of vacuum cleaner is on different floor types further down. These power modes still ensure that the vacuum cleaner remains eco-friendly.

Expert Tip

All new Henry HVR200 models come with a new and improved floor head, significantly improving performance and pick up

The Numatic Henry HVR200-12 also differs from older models due to the new and improved floor head. This is completely different from previous designs, and it even has side cleaners as well as a plastic base plate as opposed to the usual metal one.

There is a foot operated switch on the head so that you don’t need to keep bending down, as well as onboard storage for one attachment (see the attachment section further down).

Additionally, there is a storage slot for the vacuum head to keep everything standing upright when you take a break from vacuuming or need to put it away. This is discreetly located on the back of the machine.

The hose comes at a superb 2.4 metres in length, and when combined with the ten-metre cable, you have the perfect cleaning radius for any home. In fact, it also means that you won’t need to switch between sockets too much either – taking a little of the hassle out of your cleaning routine.

The hose is also conical, which means that it is wider at the cleaner end for improved airflow throughout the machine. To make things even easier, the power cable is also stored away inside the machine.

The handle comes with an extension tube for better cleaning and also contains a suction control panel that you can access easily at any time. This allows you to have a little more control over the amount of suction the vacuum cleaner has.

Plus, there is a comfortable handle for you to use to carry the machine around the house as well as up and down the stairs.

Safety Tip

The standard hose length is not long enough for use on stairs, ensure you always have the unit at the bottom of the stairs and reach as much as you can to avoid it crashing down the stairs on your head. Alternatively, purchase an extra-long hose and stay safe.

Effectiveness on Cleaning Stairs

The Numatic Henry HVR200-12 does have one flaw, and that’s the fact that it is not always the best choice for cleaning the stairs. It can be a little awkward and inconvenient, as you won’t be able to get to the top with the machine at the bottom, and you will have to carefully balance the vacuum if you do go from the top.

Numatic Henry HVR200-12 longer hose option

However, there is an option to buy an even longer hose online for reasonable prices – and there are many suppliers to choose from.

This can give you the extra reach you need to effectively clean your stairs without the risk of the vacuum falling on you.

Weight and Handling

This model of vacuum cleaner is actually quite compact, making it relatively easy to store away in cupboards and other such areas. This is helped by the aforementioned storage slot on the back for the head while it’s attached to the hose, as well as the onboard storage for one attachment.

The only downside is the fact that it can be a little heavy and bulky to carry, but when you are using it on the floor and dragging it behind you, you won’t notice this at all.

The handling is very easy, which is also thanks to the long hose and cable that allow you a wider cleaning radius.

Dust Capacity

The Numatic Henry HVR200-12 uses dust bags for collecting all of the dirt and debris in your home. These do cost money, but these bags are widely available and actually rather well priced. The bags are incredibly large, with a capacity of 9 litres to ensure that every little particle of dirt is kept inside.

They are also very strong due to the HEPA flow material used, and combined with the excellent seal, they make the perfect solution for those with asthma and allergies.

On top of all of this, they are very easy to replace and are removable without any leakage.

Different Floor Types

This vacuum cleaner does work across all floor types. It is great for edge cleaning thanks to the nifty design of the floor head, so even debris that is right up against your skirting can be removed effortlessly. When it comes to carpet, you can expect very powerful suction that will remove large debris and mess without any issue.

However, you might need to run the vacuum over the same spot a few times to get rid of everything as it can be a little too strong for smaller particles. However, its struggle with this as well as fibres and pet hair is not unusual for a suction only vacuum cleaner.

On hard floors, it works surprisingly well,(some reviewers say it’s not great on laminate) and it does a superb job of thoroughly removing small particles from the area.

Due to the brush on the floor head, it can have a habit of snow ploughing the debris (which means it pushes it forwards), but all you need to do is lift the head of the vacuum slightly while you work.

While it is less effective on hard floors in the sense that you will have to run it over a few times, it still does a better job than previous models of a higher wattage.

Attachments

The Numatic Henry HVR200-12 comes with a good number of attachments ( comes as standard with AS1 combo kit) to make cleaning your home easier. The crevice tool is ideal for getting right into all of the nooks and crannies, removing dust and debris that your vacuum cleaner would not ordinarily reach.

There is also a dusting brush for the delicate areas of your home and also for light work on your hard floors.

The all-purpose nozzle comes complete with a brush that has been designed to deal with the stairs and your upholstery in an easier fashion.

Plus, the adapter for the hose means that you can attach it directly for spaces that are more confined.

How Does It Compare?

Henry Compact HVR160

The Henry Compact HVR160 is the smaller sibling the the full size HVR200.

This model is simply smaller with a 6 litre dust capacity rather than 9 litres. It does also come with a slightly different floor head, this one has the ProFlo PF270 Combination Nozzle.

Conclusion

Hopefully, this Numatic Henry HVR200-12 review guide has given you a little more information on how it works, and the ways in which it could benefit you when you are cleaning the home. While there was some scepticism at the beginning with regards to the wattage, it has proved itself to be a model that is more powerful and effective than its predecessors.

It’s the perfect model if you want something that is robust and reliable, and the new features (such as the motor and brush head) really add a little extra to its overall performance. While there are a couple of niggles with regards to the stair cleaning abilities and the weight, there are solutions to the problems, and they are easy to implement. Overall, it’s one of our top picks.
