Upright vacuum cleaners are quite popular because they are easy to handle and provide a lot of power when running. However, it isn’t until recently that Miele hit the market with their U1 range. Taking the vacuum cleaner world by storm, we were all about to be introduced to a gamechanger.
The Miele Dynamic U1 PowerLine is a stunning machine, and a piece of cleaning gear that I simply couldn’t live without. Does that sound a little dramatic? Absolutely, but it isn’t an exaggeration. It’s one of the best upright vacuum cleaners I’ve ever come across, and I have tested out my fair share. Of course, it’s not a perfect machine, but it has a lot going for it.
Why did I love it? Well, there are quite a few reasons why I would choose the U1 as my upright vacuum cleaner. You can find them all in this detailed (but concise) review. In fact, why not grab a cup of tea, put your feet up, and flick through it to see what you think?
For those seeking something different from Miele, their new upright vacuum cleaner is the perfect match. Providing you with powerful suction and exceptionally smooth handling, it’s an upright that rivals other leading brands effortlessly. With a whole load of extra features and great accessories, it’s certainly one to look out for.
- Miele Dynamic u1 PROS AND CONS
Presenting the Miele Dynamic U1 PowerLine
The Miele Dynamic U1 PowerLine is the perfect model of vacuum cleaner for those who want an upright in the home. It is easy to control, and comes with all of the usual handling and suction advantages that an upright cleaner possesses. It offers everything you need and more in order to keep your home tidy, and is also one of only three upright models produced by Miele.
It is not ideal for those who have small homes because it is quite large, and if you want a bagless model, then you certainly need to be looking at a different range. I have a great selection of reviews for cylinder bagged and bagless Miele vacuum cleaners that you can take a look at for inspiration. Otherwise, it’s just a great standard upright that has a lot to give your home.

Design and Features
I love the way this model looks; it just has such a great design that leaves me feeling sometime between the past and future. Even better is the fact that it all just clicks together when you are assembling it, so you only need to spend two minutes getting started. For lazy houseworkers like me, this speed is optimal so that I don’t get bored with my task.
The suction power is incredible, and you can expect some great results with this machine. It may only be 900w, but I can assure you that it feels like a lot more. The fact that is also uses bagged technology means it can keep cleaning your home for longer before it needs to be emptied again; maybe even eight weeks. It’s power that needs to be recognised, and one you will grow to love and appreciate as soon as it enters your life.
The main floorhead consists of a rotating brush with an independent motor that runs at around 150w. You can switch the brush off separately for hard floors so that they are not scratched as well, and I would highly recommend doing this. There are also suction tunnels on each end, and these are to ensure that dust and debris from the side are picked up efficiently so that you only need to clean each room once.
There is also the bag light indicator, and I quite like this because it lets me know when the bag is full as well as when the filter needs to be cleaned. Changing the bag is an easy process, which is something you will learn a little later on in this review. There are also power controls on the handle of the machine, which makes it easier for you to use, as well as a lot more convenient.
The foot controls are something I love. All you need to do is slide your foot on the back pedal, and you can recline the whole machine. The switch for the brush bar is near there as well; keeping it all in one place. There are also rotary controls on the front of the vacuum cleaner so that you can decide which one is going to work best according to the floor type and the current level of mess.
There is tool storage on the back of the Miele Dynamic U1 PowerLine, and it blends in so well that you will barely notice. All three accessories can be placed here for later use, and it means that you don’t need to worry about carrying it around with you from room to room. The hose design is also very clever, because it remains sturdy even if you end up pulling the hose too hard by accident

How Noisy is it?
It’s only 79db, which is one below the EU regulation of 80db. It may not seem like a lot less, but I assure you that it is noticeable. I prefer a vacuum cleaner that incorporates quitter running, and this is part of what I like about Miele models.
Cord Length and Storage
The Miele Dynamic U1 PowerLine has a 10m cord, which gives it the ideal cleaning radius when you are moving around the home. Combined with the hose and telescopic wand, the overall cleaning area is fantastic, and I only need to switch sockets once when I am vacuuming.
When you are finished with it, the cable can be tidied away neatly so that it is out of the way. In fact, you won’t even notice it exists until you go to plug it in next. The compact design makes storing it away after use a simple task, and it fits nicely into most storage cupboards.
Weight and Handling
It comes in at 9.7kg, which makes it a very heavy vacuum cleaner to use; especially compared with the bagged cylinder models. However, I will say that I didn’t really notice the weight when I was pushing it across the floor because it glides so smoothly. However, when I went to carry it up the stairs, I certainly felt the heaviness in my arm when I was lifting it.
The handling is very smooth, and this is certainly aided by the foot controls on the head of the cleaner. It makes the transition between cleaning modes easy, and also means you can slip right under furniture because the handle bends along with the main body of the vacuum. I can’t say there was anything I was displeased with about the handling; it’s just the weight that surprised me here.
Dust Bags and Filter
The dust bags are able to contain 6L of dust and debris, which is quite an impressive amount. The bag is also very easy to change as you simply need to pop open the front compartment and slide the bag out. It can then be thrown away, and a new one put in its place. It does come with a dust bag, but you will need to buy replacements separately from the Miele website.
The filter is superb as it is a HEPA 13 model. This is especially good for those with asthma and allergies, which means there is a lower chance of reaction and a higher chance of cleaning success. The filter can be removed and washed, which is ideal for those who aren’t too keen on the replaceable ones; like me. Having asthma and allergy sufferers in my home, I was very pleased with this feature and how easy the filters were to access.
How Does It Clean?
What about the cleaning power? Well, the Miele Dynamic U1 PowerLine has been advertised as one that cannot be used on hard floors, but this is a lie. It actually does a really good job of picking everything up, and I didn’t notice any scratches afterwards. There isn’t even any snowploughing, so I don’t know why Miele is trying to keep this hidden gem away from us.
It does really well on carpet as well, and I like that this model is good across the board. It would struggle with pet hair, but general mess and dirt cannot get past this machine. Again, there is no snowploughing here, and you can really feel the machine working its way into the carpet to try and reach the embedded grime that has been left behind.
It doesn’t quite reach the top of the stairs, but it can be used to clean them quite effectively. All you need to do is lift it up a little so that you can get the last few. Similarly, floor to ceiling cleaning is effortless because of the long wand and the attachments that come with it to extend that reach.
It comes with all the tools you need to keep your home clean, and I know that I would never be caught without mine. It’s amazing how useful they are, and this is why I have created a quick list of the tools you can expect to find with the Miele Dynamic U1 PowerLine:
- Crevice tool (long). This is for all the nooks and crannies in your home, and for reaching those difficult places. The fact that this is a long one is extra handy because it makes the reach that much better.
- Dusting brush. You can use this on all your delicate surfaces, but I think it does its best work on the kitchen floor because it is so gentle on tiles. In reality, the possibilities are endless.
- Upholstery tool. This is used for furniture and car interiors, which gives your vacuum cleaner more versatility. It can also be used on the stairs, which is where you will normally find mine.
What About the Other Models?
Interestingly, the Miele Dynamic U1 PowerLine isn’t the only model available in the U1 range. There are two others that you can take a look at to see if they are going to work better for you. Below, you will find a few details on each of them to help you determine the ideal choice.
Miele Dynamic U1 Allergy PowerLine Review
What sets this model apart is the fact that it has a HEPA 13 filter. It is the most powerful on the market, and has been designed to give those with allergies and asthma as much protection as possible while they clean. It reduces the risk of an attack, and the washable filter makes life a lot easier. The remote-control handle is also an excellent touch, and its ability to clean all floor types makes it a superb addition to any home.
Miele Dynamic U1 Cat & Dog review
This model has been designed to deal with pet fur; no matter how many there are in the home. The suction is more powerful, able to reach deep into carpets in order to bring up embedded dirt and debris that has been lodged within it. The filtration system is more advanced to help with allergies and asthma, as well as to trap pet dander. The filter is even able to neutralise pet odours for the perfect clean – so you never have to worry that your home smells again.
After reading through this guide, I hope you have found a better understanding of the Miele Dynamic U1 PowerLine and how it works. Not only that, but also the other models in the range. Choosing the one that will work best for you isn’t easy, but the function of each should be clear.
There are loads of similarities between each of the U1 models, but there are also differences as well. The main one is their function, and the power/filtration system that comes with them as a result. This is why the cat and dog model will always be top for me, as I live in a home that is filled with pets. However, the standard PowerLine worked exceptionally well, and I was really impressed with the way it cleaned, as well as the easy handling. No matter which you choose, it’s a good one.
