Dyson is a big name with a lot to offer, and they manufacture some of the best home appliances and tools around. From amazing blade-free fans and hairdryers, to vacuum cleaners, they really do have it all.
One of the great things about this company is the fact that they are usually ahead of the curve when it comes to innovative new technology, and their quality engineering is always on show. The Dyson Ball Animal 2 is perfect for people like me who have a home full of shedding pets, but also very little cupboard space for storage.
Having owned the previous Dyson Ball Animal, I was eager to see if this model was able to overcome some of the shortcomings I experienced with the other one – namely the brush bar getting clogged with pet hair.
Ready to proceed with an open mind, this is one model that I was really looking forward to. Honestly, I was so pleased with this vacuum cleaner, and I feel that it carried the Dyson legacy on perfectly.
Below, you will find a detailed Dyson Ball Animal 2 review, and one that I have taken great time and care to write so that you have all the information you need before you decide to buy. Take a moment to kick back and read through my honest thoughts on this vacuum cleaner.

Presenting the Dyson Ball Animal 2
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 is a superb piece of kit to have in your home, and one that offers the suction you need to really tackle the pet hair that has made itself comfortable in your carpet and on your wood floors. With new and advanced features that far exceed those offered by previous models, it will make your life a whole lot simpler.
However, if upright vacuums aren’t really your thing, you might want to give the cylinder version a try. The Dyson Big Ball Animal 2 offers many of the same features, but in a compact and powerful ball that can be dragged along the home and even lifts itself back up if it gets knocked over. It’s a great alternative to consider.
Features and Benefits
Power and Design
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 is a sturdy and reliable upright vacuum cleaner, and its sleek design means that it is quite compact and easy to store away – despite the ball on the base of it.
This is ideal for those with small homes and storage areas, as well as those who just want to maximise the amount of space they have available.
In order to comply with EU regulations, it also has a 600w motor. However, before you judge it and determine it too weak for your home, you need to try it out.
The suction is incredible, and arguably more powerful than its predecessor - giving you all the strength you need to get your home perfectly clean.
At the same time, it is also more energy efficient and will save you a little cash on your bill. The suction control is very easy to access as well, and you can find it on the main floorhead.
This gives you the option to use low, medium, or high levels of suction when you are cleaning – although the medium setting is the best one to opt for when you just need a regular clean. It’s the best for daily use, although the other options offer exceptional power as well.
For the best cleaning results, make sure you wash both of the filters regularly. This will improve suction and dust pick-up massively, and not washing the filters can lead to any vacuum cleaner malfunctioning over time.
The main floorhead is incredibly large, and the brush bar opening at the base is almost the same size. This larger opening means that the amount of suction is maximised, as is the surface area that the floorhead is able to cover. This also means that there is less movement involved on your part, cleaning your home in a faster time.
It also comes with a longer turbine brush that is slim enough to reach under low furniture. The metal wand also features Dyson’s new and flexible design.
The handle is comfortable to hold, while the telescopic tube features a versatile design that moves up and down effortlessly while you clean – allowing you to reach high and low places alike in a smoother and less time-consuming manner. It also swivels around with ease for even better handling.
The included tool holder clips onto the vacuum cleaner, and there are two different ones so that you can carry three tools around with you when you clean. This makes things much easier for you, and means that there is less to move separately.
In addition to this, there is a very long cord (10m), and it wraps up very neatly on the back of the machine, with the plug clipping on at the end. In another bid to comply with EU regulation, the Dyson Ball Animal 2 only has 80db of sound.
This makes it much quieter than previous models, and also ensures that you don’t end up with a deafening experience. The noise is also low as opposed to high and shrill, providing you with a more comfortable clean.
Effectiveness When Cleaning Stairs
This is certainly more effective than its cylinder counterpart when it comes to cleaning stairs, as the hose on the Dyson Ball Animal 2 can reach between 9 and 13 steps – more than enough to get the average home clean. The hose is very long, providing you with a less stressful experience.
Plus, if you need a little more reach to get to the very top, there is no need to try a dangerous balancing act on the stairs. All you need to do is tip the vacuum backwards, and you will get some extra length, leaving you able to hoover the stairs in a safe and efficient manner.
While the Dyson Ball Animal 2 is able to reach stairs better than its cylinder counterpart, you should never try to balance it on the stairs. The vacuum will tilt backwards quite a bit, leaving you with enough reach to get most (if not all) of your stairs.
Weight and Handling
The classic ball technology makes this model really easy to handle, so you can manoeuvre it with great ease around your home. In many ways, it is like the Light Ball on steroids, and it will provide you with a smooth and easy experience that you won’t know how you lived without.
It might be just what you need if you are tired of trying to get stiff old uprights to turn the way you want them to. The weight is about average, and while it is relatively easy to push around, you might struggle a little when using the maximum power setting on carpets.
Other than that, you won’t really notice the weight, although you may find that it can be a little heavy and clunky when you need to carry it between locations.
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 has a 1.8L capacity, ensuring that you do not need to stop regularly to empty the canister in order to get your home clean. This is an improvement on previous models, and it also benefits from the new emptying system, which comes in two stages.
After removing the bin, you press down on the red bar – cleaning the shroud and removing excess dust that might be clinging to it. Once this is done, press the bar again, and the dirt will be released into the bin.
To lock it again, you just need to close the lid and push it back up, an action that can be done using the floor if you don’t want to touch and excess dust. There are also two washable filters included with this model.
The first is located above the bin, like with most Dyson vacuum cleaners, and this is very easy to remove and wash. The second is the exhaust filter that you find behind the ball. This can take a little more effort to reach, but it is worth giving it a good scrub when you do the first one.
The filtration system is incredibly effective, capturing 99.7% of allergens with ease, so those with asthma and allergies don’t need to worry about suffering from an attack while vacuuming – especially since clean air is pushed out of the vacuum instead of dust.
Did You Know
This is one of the last corded Dyson models to be released. Recently, Dyson announced that they would stop developing new corded vacuum cleaners in order to make way for their new and powerful range of cordless vacuums, each of which you can read more about on our site.
Cleaning Different Floor Types
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 is fantastic for cleaning all floor types in an efficient manner. On the low or regular setting, it does a great job of cleaning carpets, although the max setting will offer a deeper and more thorough clean.
This is especially good for embedded hair and dirt that needs some extra love and attention to get it back into top condition. The max setting is also better for collecting smaller particles. For hard floors, the regular setting is excellent, and it offers more than enough power to collect all of the particles and debris on the floor.
While the brush bar works its way deep into the carpet, on hard floors it has a different function. It will seal in suction for a really good clean that can even reach any gaps in the floor to bring up old dirt and grime.
The only thing you might need to look out for is the side exhausts. These are very powerful, and you may find that they end up blowing some of the mess away when you go past it. While this effect is minimal, it does occur and is something to keep an eye on while you are vacuuming.
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 comes with some fantastic attachments, but it also has the new quick release system for clipping them onto the vacuum cleaner. This method means that they are not going to become loose, nor will they get worn or stuck. It is a fast and simple way of simply slipping the attachments onto the machine.
It has a standard tool collection that you would expect to find with any vacuum cleaner. The stair tool is perfect for getting pet hair and general debris off your furniture, but it is also the perfect size for giving the stairs a good and thorough clean.
Additionally, it comes with a combination tool. This has a standard crevice tool, as well as a dusting brush that can be slid back when it is not needed. The turbine tool is one of the best and most exciting features offered by this pet vacuum cleaner.
Instead of using a single brush bar, it has two rotating brushes that work to collect pet hair quickly and effectively without becoming tangled or clogged – and it really does work. No matter how much fluff has gathered on your floor or upholstery, this tool can get rid of it really quickly.
How Does It Compare?
Here are some other, similar, models of vacuum cleaner for you to consider, just in case you want to look at other options before you commit to the Dyson Ball Animal 2.
This cylinder vacuum cleaner is another model of corded vacuum that Dyson have manufactured, and it is perfect for those who prefer using a classic ball model that has a compact design, and so is easy to put away.
Many of the features that the Big Ball Animal 2 has are shared by the Ball Animal 2, and the main difference between them is that one is an upright and the other is a cylinder. The Big Ball Animal 2 boasts a combination of powerful suction and easy handling, with the large ball making steering a simple task.
It also comes with a number of accessories and floor heads that will make removing pet hair and debris an effortless task. It works fantastically across all floor types, and benefits from the new bin emptying system for a smooth and clean experience.
Hopefully, this Dyson Ball Animal 2 review guide has given you all the information you need when it comes to learning more about how this vacuum cleaner works, as well as the ways in which it can benefit your home and keep it free from bundles of pet hair and fluff.
It uses all of Dyson’s new features, including the quick release attachment system as well as the smooth bin emptying – leaving you with a clean canister as well as a less messy release. The only thing that should be mentioned is that it is a little heavy to use, and pushing it can cause some fatigue in your arm when on maximum power mode.
Additionally, carrying it can be a little tricky because it is heavy and bulky. The handle clicking mechanism can also be a little tricky, to begin with, but we can assure you that you will get used to it in no time.
The powerful suction and thorough clean offered by this vacuum cleaner, combined with the additional features, makes it a fitting end to the Dyson corded legacy.
