A SMART can be installed in most homes of any age, including bungalows, multi storey houses, cottages or apartments. The inlets need to be positioned in areas that are unlikely to be covered by furniture; ideal locations include near doors, in hall ways and landings. The ducting can be concealed in the backs of cupboards or built in wardrobes, roof space, underneath kitchen units or baths and existing box work.
Plan your pipe system with the minimum number of bends and ducting, but do not compromise on inlet locations for the sake of an easier installation. Make sure that you can reach every corner with no more than a 9m/30ft vacuum hose. SMART Central Vacuums Ltd recommend the use of a 7.5m/25ft hose, although in existing homes this is not always possible.
It is easier to install a SMART in a property during the building process because the ducting route and inlet locations are more visible, you also have a larger variety of locations to conceal the ducting, such as in the insulation layer within the screed and in the floor and wall voids.
A SMART is surprisingly easy to retrofit regardless of the age of your home; it is rare to find a property that cannot have a SMART without keeping all the ducting completely concealed or undertaking major disruption. An integral garage often provides a good SMART power unit location with a convenient ducting run. Alternatively, a vacuum power unit located under the stairs provides an easily accessible inlet on the outside of the stair cupboard, with a second inlet mounted on the top stair.
